ECHAP - Sound piece navigating between real and imaginary territories; what are our areas of freedom today?

Exclusively done with real sounds and field recordings from all over the world, Echap recomposes a fictional reality through a journey of discovery. This journey questions societal control and spaces to escape in a world where everything is being manufactured, can be bought and standardized; through exploring the shifts between mechanical and nature, reality and imagination. The choice of field recording is set up like a playground, suggesting an horizontality and a widening of spaces questionning what is "already there", already present, our place as humans.

Because sometimes we need to let go. Listening to other worlds, other ways to live and reconnect with natural elements. Touching the sea, the earth or minerals, our bodies becoming porous; letting go of the second skin that conditions us like machines until we wear out. The sound piece takes the temperature of an era and a way of living, of a rhythm and its resistance, of a pulse that fights in order to not get lost in its own game.

This sound piece is the result of a collaboration between Vanessa Vudo, Noémie Fargier and myself that started after we met during a field recording practice with Felix Blume in Arles, organized by the association Phonurgia Nova in March 2019. Back in Paris, we decided to develop a collaborative art piece, driven by the necessity to find spaces, moments to breathe in a urban density that inspires us as much as it drives us to escape.

Creative collaborative process

1. Time for exchanging common feelings and ideas

2. Field recording and sound collecting, exploration of the sensation of rhythm, breathing, spaces...

3. Collective listening sessions, emergence of developing directions

4. From the development arises a narrative

5. Editing (particularly during artistic residencies when we gathered for a few days in a row; dedicating ourselves entirely to the project.)

We are proud to present a common art piece that we believe has been made possible thanks to the attention and focus we gave to listening to the world that surrounds us as well as listening to each other during the process.
